About Me

I'm Nick - a full-stack engineer based in North Queensland. For the past four years I've built web applications for defence communications systems, where a dropped message isn't an inconvenience, it's a failure.

I work primarily in TypeScript and Python - React and Next.js on the front end, Django and Postgres behind it. Lately I've been filling in the infrastructure side: containers, CI, and the plumbing that sits under everything else.

What I'm building

Waypoint - a small SaaS platform where several apps share one account and one backend. The first is Simmer, a meal planner: plan a week, get the shopping list, or let it build the week for you when nobody can decide. Health and scheduling apps are next. It's equal parts side business and a place to make architectural decisions I don't get to make often at work.

How I work

I want to understand how things work, all the way down. If I don't know something yet, that's not a big deal - it's an opportunity. I like taking a complex problem and finding the simple solution hiding inside it, and I'd rather remove a redundancy than work around it.

The other half of that is writing it down. Documenting what I learn - from the basics through to the parts that took three days to work out - is most of why this site exists.

What I'm after

Work where the problems are complex and the constraints are real, alongside people who are better than me at something. If you're hiring for remote full-stack work, have a contract that needs someone who'll read the docs properly, or just want to talk about something I've written here - my inbox is always open.

Outside software

Piano, gardening, fishing, gaming, hiking, cooking and barbecue - so expect the occasional post about those, and whatever else I pick up along the way.
